Life After Weight Loss Surgery
If there is one thing that you need to remember when it comes to weight loss surgery – regardless of which procedure you go through – it’s the fact that it’s not the quick fix that people associate it with. It is simply the start of a whole new round of weight loss programs and lifestyle changes that you need to go through to shed the excess pounds and live a healthier life.
Life after weight loss surgery is going to be a lot different from how you lived it before going through the treatment. You will have to go through some major adjustments in your diet and lifestyle. As such, you will also need to be mentally prepared as some changes are not as easy as they seem.
Eating habits
You should expect drastic adjustments in your eating habits. And since your stomach can now handle only a small amount of food at a time, these changes are pretty much permanent. After surgery, your doctor will probably give you some guidelines on how to go through the changes and what you’re supposed to do to adjust to your stomach’s reduced capacity. He will also refer you to a nutritionist-dietitian who will help you plan meals that are both nourishing and appropriate for your current condition.
Back to work
How soon you can go back to your normal daily activities such as work or school will greatly depend on your body’s ability to adapt and recover as well as the nature of your activities. Many patients are able to return to work within one to three weeks after surgery. If you have gone through a type of open gastric bypass, the recovery time will be longer. You can expect to be back to work in six weeks at least. Exercise will have to be incorporated gradually starting on the first week post-surgery.
Birth control
For the first two years after surgery, women will need to use birth control methods to prevent pregnancy. The added stress that comes with being with child can lead to fetal damage so it’s best to forego having a child for the time being.
Check-ups
After surgery, you will need to go through follow-up check-ups with your doctor to make sure that your body is adapting well to the changes that gastric bypass has brought about. Your doctor will need to monitor your body’s recovery and is usually on guard for potential nutritional deficiencies. You will probably go through a series of tests regularly for certain conditions such as anemia and iron deficiency.
Support groups
The challenge of life after gastric bypass may seem like a lot for many people and this is why support groups are established for those who have gone through this type of surgery. It would be a good idea to take part in these organizations so you can meet people who are going through the same issues as you are. This will make it easier for you to be able to brave through the overwhelming changes in your lifestyle.
Life after weight loss surgery may sound daunting but it is a step towards a heathier way of living. The idea is to take heart in the fact that you are now taking a proactive effort to improve your body’s health and well-being.
